LinkedIn Gets its Unofficial, Silly and Tempered Version for Pakistan Posted: 03 Jul 2012 01:14 AM PDT LinkedIn would cry its heart out or even better it might crash its head into wall if it ever happens to see LinkedIn.com.pk – a country TLD for professional networking website i.e. LinkedIn.com. LinkedIn.com.pk – apparently registered by someone from Pakistan – hosts a clutter of services including job offerings without much sense. I would rather call it a MFA website (made for adsense) which has got all the properties to get penalized by Google in less than two hours. Syed Arshad Jilani, the contact person mentioned in PKNIC records for owner of the domain, should have contacted LinkedIn.com to hand this domain over to them in return of hefty bucks, instead of making few cents out of this incredibly precious domain name by destroying everything associated with it. Not to mention, LinkedIn.com has got every right to get to PKNIC to grab country level TLD for their registered trademark. It maybe recalled that LinkedIn and LinkedIn.com are registered trademarks of LinkedIn Ltd. Idea of earning money online has hit Pakistanis so hard that they try every possible (yet stupid) way to earn dollars – but from the experience we can tell you that these efforts never materialize, unless you bring innovation and productivity in your product. CCP Imposes Rs. 770 Million Penalty on Banks for Charging ATM Withdrawals Posted: 02 Jul 2012 11:21 PM PDT The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has imposed a total penalty in the sum of Rs. 770 million, including Rs. 50 million on 1-Link (Guarantee) Limited and Rs. 50 Million each on its 11 founding member banks and Rs. 10 Million on each of its 17 non-founding member banks for imposing uniform customer charges for ATM cash withdrawal transactions in violation of Section 4 of the Competition Act, 2010. A CCP Bench comprising of Chairperson, Ms. Rahat Kaunain Hassan, Member, Mr. Abdul Ghaffar and Member, Dr. Joseph Wilson, passed an Order on June 28, 2012 in respect of the proceedings initiated against 1-Link and its member banks for imposing uniform customer charges for cash withdrawal transactions from ATM machines, which amounts to violate Section 4 of the Competition Act. CCP on its own took notice of the uniform rates implemented by the banks in Pakistan for ATM cash withdrawal transactions. In preliminary fact finding it was observed that 1-Link holds 80% of market share in shared ATM network services in Pakistan and is a consortium of 11 major banks that are also represented on its Board of Directors while the other 20 banks are its members. To further assess the matter CCP approached the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) to enquire whether it has fixed the ATM charges. SBP in response stated the banks are free to determine these charges. Moreover, in response to letters sent to various banks seeking rationale for uniform rates, two member banks of 1-Link confirmed that they have to comply with the schedule of charges devised by the 1-Link. Given facts and circumstances raised a suspicion that 1-Link and its member banks may be engaged in any suspected collaborative activity to fix the rates of ATM transactions. After inquiry, CCP concluded that such practice by banks calls for imposition of penalty on each party. 1-Link and member banks were further directed to cease and desist from conduct of collective decision making or behavior with respect to charging a uniform fee from customers for ATM cash withdrawal transactions and to hold their Board meetings for deliberation and independent decision making with respect to such imposition of fee/charge from their customers. Nokia and UNESCO Launch App for Improving Literacy Skills Posted: 02 Jul 2012 11:10 PM PDT Nokia and UNESCO Pakistan today announced the launch of a basic literacy application named eTaleem for Nokia phones. eTaleem will allow users to easily access lessons for Urdu reading, phonetics, word synthesis, sentence making, and basic math. eTaleem app has been developed by Lakson Business Solutions for Nokia as a component to the UNESCO Project "Mobile Literacy training for Literacy Training of Rural Female Adults". The application can be downloaded on most Nokia S40 devices. According to the latest Pakistan Social and Living Standards Measurement (PSLM) Survey 2010-11, the literacy rate across the country is 58 percent, with lower rates in rural areas for women. Using mobile phone as a learning tool via UNESCO project can accelerate the literacy level country wide. The learning content to Nokia's eTaleem app is based on UNESCO's learning DVDs designed and tested in community learning centers all over Pakistan. By enabling access to the high quality educational material via affordable mobile phones, Nokia broadens the reach of the UNESCO trainings to rural areas, supporting continued learning after the community classes' attendance comes to an end. "We are really appreciative of Nokia enabling access to our contents of basic literacy via a modern mobile phone application. It is a great opportunity for our post literate learners, as using this application on mobile phone and in Urdu language, will keep them intact with reading and writing skills and making literacy skills relevant to 21st century life demands," said Kozue Kay Nagata, Director and Representative of UNESCO Pakistan. With the implementation of mobile learning component, the programme gained the Government Sectors' support, with the Literacy Department of Punjab and the Education Department of Ministry of Capital Administration Development as new partners to the endeavor for higher literacy penetration in Pakistan. "To institutionalize our literacy project in the system, we must scale up our project to government sector, so that a larger number of users can benefit from the project in the future", added the Director of UNESCO Pakistan. "Mobile learning can enrich and enhance learning opportunities for all. In remote areas or places where accessing education materials can be difficult, Nokia tools such as eTaleem or Nokia Education Delivery – which are both, used within the UNESCO project – can bridge the digital divide. These mobile learning tools host a great potential to make a real difference in people's lives, giving them easy access to quality education" says Ulrike Vott, Nokia's Regional Sustainability Manager for Middle East and Africa. Presently, 2500 adult female learners in rural districts of Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa are using the eTaleem application as part of their 6 months literacy training. During the past few months, the UNESCO Project used another Nokia solution – the Nokia Education Delivery to train 70 teachers in 7 districts supporting their professional development. Nokia is providing the mobile learning innovations to UNESCO as part of the organizations' global partnership: UNESCO and Nokia joined hands to progress towards meeting one of the United Nation's Millennium Goals -"Education for All".
