Samsung Galaxy Nexus Launched by Mobilink Posted: 15 Mar 2012 06:33 AM PDT Mobilink today announced the launch of Samsung Galaxy Nexus (also known as the Nexus Prime) in Pakistan. The Galaxy Nexus is Google's flagship smartphone, officially released with Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), and encasing a 4.65" HD Super AMOLED display. Powered by 1.2GHz dual core processor, the Galaxy Nexus allows the user to take panoramic shots and videos in 1080p using the 5 mega-pixel continuous auto-focus camera. WiMAX South Asia Summit to be Held in Islamabad Posted: 15 Mar 2012 06:01 AM PDT The WiMAX Forum has announced its 2012 series of Operator Summits, WiMAX South Asia 2012, to be held at the Islamabad Marriott Hotel in Islamabad, Pakistan April 2nd to 3rd. This event, officially endorsed by the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority and co-organized with the assistance of Wateen Telecom, will focus specifically on supporting the South Asian operator community in deploying profitable WiMAX networks.

Branchless Banking Transactions Hit Rs. 79.4 Billion Mark During Sep-Dec 2011 Posted: 14 Mar 2012 10:20 PM PDT
Branchless banking in Pakistan witnessed another quarter (Sep-Dec 2011) with impressive growth on all fronts, the most prominent being the remark-able growth in number of Branchless Banking (BB) accounts and transactions. Official stats issued by State Bank of Pakistan said that by the end of December 2011, more than 929,000 customers have been registered as m-wallet users. Report said that the number of transactions per day registered 30 percent growth to Rs. 228,855 from Rs. 176,296 in July-September 2011. The report said the average number of transactions per month has increased to 7 million worth Rs. 27 billion. Similarly, the average size of transaction was Rs. 3,855. Moreover, another 3,110 agents joined the fast growing network of branchless banking raising the total number of agents to 22,512 out of which 92% are active. The agents' network now covers the entire length and breadth of the country having foot print in 86% of the total districts. However, the network has a high concentration of 43% in 10 districts. Total number of transactions processed during the quarter was 20.6 million, valuing Rs. 79.4 billion. Bills payment & top-up remained the dominating activity with 53% share in total numbers, followed by fund transfer and deposits with share of 39% and 8% respectively. However, in value terms fund transfers have dominated with 71% share, followed by bill payments with 26% share. The Person to Person (P2P)' payments remained the most popular mechanism with 74% share in the total fund transfer, followed by Account-to-Person (A2P)' transfer with share of 21%. Account-to-Account (A2A)' transfer is just 4% of total fund transfer. More than 929,000 mobile accounts have so far been registered with majority in level 1 accounts (92%) followed by level 2 (5%)and level 3 (2%). Vote Verification via SMS Served 4.5 Million Requests in 2 Weeks Posted: 14 Mar 2012 10:10 PM PDT Over 4.5 million citizens have so far verified their records of vote through SMS service which was launched from March 1 to facilitate citizens to verify their vote registration and particulars in the voters lists. Deputy Chairman National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), Tariq Malik yesterday told APP that Mobilink, being the largest mobile phone operator is leading in term of checking vote verification through SMS, as around 1.44 million eligible voters have utilized its network. Telenor is second as far as using the particular service is concerned. Around 1.282 million voters have so far checked the status of their votes through its network. Ufone is third in a row with 980,072 SMS, Warid with 448,438 and Zong with 392,816. Tariq Malik said Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in collaboration with NADRA and mobile phone operators launched the world's biggest short message service (SMS) for 83.2 million Pakistani voters besides displaying new electoral rolls across the country. He said on sending at short code 8300 CNIC number (without dashes), a voters gets an SMS with the information of his/her electoral area name in Urdu language, where she/he is registered to vote, including tehsil and district. Exact Block code number per Pakistan Census Organization is also displayed with serial number in the respective voters list. Mr. Malik appreciated the cooperation of mobile companies in this historic move leading towards ensuring free and fair elections.
