Telecom Sector Revenues Swell to 197 Billion in 1H 2012

Half yearly revenues of the telecom sector have reached to all time high of Rs 197.68 billion during the first half (July-December 2011) of current financial year.

Second quarter revenues for telecom sector stood at 99.4 billion, that's all time high in a quarter, registering a growth of 9.1 percent over the corresponding quarter in previous year.

Stats, revealed by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, said that this growth in telecom revenues, despite declining ARPUs and stiff competition, is due to higher usage of telecom services in addition to service charges that telecom operators have been imposing over last one year or so.

The revenues of telecom sector can be divided into voice and data. With the increasing use of data services in the country, estimated data revenues of telecom operators are on the rise and have reached Rs. 25.9 billion during July-Dec 2011.

Overall, the share of data revenue in total telecom revenues has reached 12.4 percent in Oct-December 2012, up from 11.1 percent an year ago in Oct-Dec 2011.

PTCL Celebrated World Environment Day 2012

image001 thumb PTCL Celebrated World Environment Day 2012Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) commemorated the World Environment Day (WED) 2012 on June 5 by reaffirming its commitment to align organizational efforts with environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.

As part of WED 2012's theme 'Green Economy: Does it include YOU?', PTCL engaged its employees with the message, "Every drop is precious. Treat water with respect."

In the recent past, PTCL has made significant efforts to reduce its carbon footprint. By encouraging a paperless work environment, the telecom giant is aiming to reduce the adverse effect of greenhouse gases on the planet.

PTCL is one of the few companies in Pakistan to switch from using simple paint to LED-free paint, thus making its buildings environment-friendly. Furthermore, the Company has installed solar panels at its Headquarters, which are powering its outdoor lighting through solar energy. PTCL is also replacing its normal light bulbs with energy efficient LED lights and energy-savers.

PTCL is continuously striving for a greener Pakistan.  Recently, it planted 300 tree saplings in its Headquarter grounds as well as residential colonies spread across Islamabad. PTCL is steadfastly using recycled material for its products. The Company also recently launched a clean drinking water project, installing 41 filtration plants for community welfare.

Last year, the National Forum for Environment and Health recognized PTCL's continued efforts for sustainable environment by awarding the Company the prestigious "National Environmental Excellence Award 2011".

The United Nations has designated June 5th as 'World Environment Day', commemorated annually to increase global awareness about environmental hazards and to strive for a greener tomorrow.

Ufone Assists in TCF Career Counseling Programme

Ufone logo low thumb Ufone Assists in TCF Career Counseling ProgrammeTaking a step forward to promote education amongst the underprivileged, Ufone Volunteers took part in "The Citizens Foundation's (TCF) Career Counseling programme.

Since inception Ufone has had a major focus on child health care and education. TCF's 'Career Counseling Program' is designed for TCF students who were appearing for the Matriculation examinations this year.

With the use of a pre-designed personality test and other self-appraisal exercises, counselors helped discover and highlight the aptitude of the concerned young adult.  Through this process of derivation, the aim of the counselor is to increase each individual's self-awareness and map future career opportunities for them. This process will help enable the young adult to become focused and work towards realistic and achievable goals.

In continuation of Ufone's collaboration with TCF, TCF organized workshops in Lahore and Karachi for Ufone volunteers to prepare the volunteers to act as mentors and instill in them the knowledge and expertise to carry out counseling activities as per the objective of the programme.

Akbar Khan, Chief Marketing Officer at Ufone, said that the volunteers were very keen on sharing their experiences with the students at TCF schools.  He said that the aim was to make a difference, no matter how big or small, in the lives of these children.
Ufone, being a socially responsible organization continues to be at the forefront of many mentor initiatives. Since inception Ufone has taken serious interest in in-house and external CSR projects and over the last few years, has carried out various initiatives that benefit the deserving segments of the society. These initiatives have profited the populace as well as provided an opportunity for the volunteers to fully appreciate the art of distributing knowledge.
