Following the global trend of social media, ProPakistani in collaboration with Microsoft Pakistan arranged a meet up for the bloggers from various platforms. The event also showcased an insight to the latest social media trends and digital tools.

This first session was attended by IT bloggers and Marketing professionals of Microsoft Pakistan, who provided insight to the participants on the diverse new aspects of blogging tools.

Talking at the occasion Shoaib Khalil, Marketing Lead, Microsoft Pakistan said that "Microsoft takes pride in claiming its share in the phenomenal evolution of blogging. With numerous benefits for an individual as well as for the society, blogging has changed things rapidly. This can be seen in the dramatic increase in the influence of blogging." He added further: "One thing common between Microsoft and blogging is they both give you an innovative platform to express your ideas."

Aamir Attaa from ProPakistani.com, also present at the occasion, said "blogging made its room so rapidly that today we have credible bloggers in the country, trusted by hundreds of thousands to get fresh, updated content for which they wait anxiously." He further commented that credit for this uplift goes to multinational companies which grasped the potential in blogging and that is why we hear terms like bloggers' meetups, seminars, workshops, blogging competitions etc.

Over 35 bloggers attended the meet-up at a café in Lahore. The audience was a mix of experienced, newbies as well as aspiring young bloggers.

A lot of blogging issues were brought up and discussed at the meet-up regarding Pakistani bloggers such as why Pakistanis don't blog as much as their counterparts in the other countries and what kind of apprehensions bloggers usually face while blogging and maintaining active presence on social media platforms.

Many bloggers also shared their blogging experience and helped out aspiring bloggers with their queries regarding blogging and remaining active on social media platforms.

Talking about the latest features of Internet Explorer 9, Mr. Tahir Masood, Developers Evangelist Lead, Microsoft Pakistan said "The best thing for Windows 7 users is the pinned site feature in IE9. It opens up all kinds of possibilities like site owners promoting their sites for pinned treatment and offering buttons on their pages that pin a site automatically. Microsoft should be lauded for giving sites full control of app even though Chrome’s application shortcuts have the upper hand since they give the whole window to the site."

The meet-up also included the exclusive review on the Windows Mobile applications development and Marketplace which is about to be launched in Pakistan.

PTA Announces Broadband QoS Survey Results 2011

Posted: 23 Jan 2012 11:15 PM PST

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) carried out the second nationwide Broadband QoS Survey of all wireless and wire-line service providers throughout the country during third and fourth quarter of 2011.

During the survey the already devised Quality of Service (QoS) Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in consultation with services providers were measured.

These are Network Availability, Service Availability, Download and Upload bandwidth Speed (i.e. how much data a subscriber can receive or send to the maximum), Round-Trip Time (i.e. the time taken for the data to reach a particular destination and return), Contention Ratio (i.e. the ratio of Total bandwidth/No. of subscribers or number of subscribers per unit of bandwidth) and Retain-ability (i.e. for how much time a connection remained connected during the period of 60 minutes), etc.

It is worthwhile to note that higher the bandwidth of download/upload speed and retain-ability and lower the round trip time and contention ratio, higher is the service quality is considered superior.

PTA grades aforesaid parameters into categories like A, B, C etc., based on the percentage of score obtained during the measurement.

For 1Mbps broadband package of wireless broadband service providers rating remained as:

  • Wateen Telecom has been placed in Category-A at Lahore and Rawalpindi and Category-B at Karachi, Quetta and Peshawar.
  • Qubee and WorldCall are also in Category-A at Lahore and Category-B at Karachi
  • Wi-Tribe is in Category-B at Rawalpindi.
  • PTCL has been placed in Category-A at Lahore, Rawalpindi, Peshawar and Quetta and in Category-B at Karachi.

We are awaiting complete details from PTA on the survey. We will update this post with complete details when and if they are made available by PTA.

It may be mentioned here that, Broadband is a significant economic stimulus for any country as changing dynamics of the world economy rely heavily on well connected economic resources of a country. Advanced content, high quality mediums, reliable infrastructure and well linked information repositories determine the future of country's economy by providing right information delivered through reliable and secure communication links at the right time.

Wateen to Launch Freedom Booths

Posted: 23 Jan 2012 10:38 PM PST

Wateen Telecom has announced the launch of its new Freedom Booths.

The Freedom Booths, which looks like old telephone booths from the 60s, include a laptop fitted with a web camera and a telephone system through which consumers can make voice calls to their loved ones and record the ideas and messages they would like to share with others.

The Freedom Booths – the first of their kind to be launched anywhere in the world – reflect Wateen's capabilities as a leader in converged communication services and exemplify the company's data, voice and content creation services.

The applications for the Freedom Booths are limitless. This cutting-edge medium of communications aims to maximize the application potential of the internet, while helping connect people across the country.

With approximately 1.5 million connections serving a population of over 175 million people, Wateen believes it is necessary to promote the benefits of telecommunications technologies and the internet to the people of Pakistan. Currently, Wateen has launched the Freedom Booths in select areas with extremely low internet penetration in order to generate interest in telecoms and internet technology.

Wateen is carrying out this experiential marketing activity in Multan, Sialkot, Faisalabad, Gujrat, Sahiwal and Sargodha, where the Booths are being taken to select public venues on the back of quad bikes. Members of the public will then be asked to record messages and ideas on how they feel they can help improve Pakistan.

Syed Jibran Ali, Wateen's chief commercial officer, said, "Currently, we are asking people to share their ideas on how they intend to make a change in society and help progress Pakistan. In the future, we also intend on utilising this content and sharing it through Wateen's various media channels and cable network."

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Naeem Zamindar, CEO Wateen Telecom, said, "We are excited with the opportunity the Freedom Booths present – how these can revolutionise the use of communications on a global level and change the way we experience the internet. The Booths are also a great medium for people to experience the promise of the Wateen brand and the services we offer. I believe these will help people who have never used the internet before to experience its power and to bring about a digital revolution in Pakistan."
